Big Pool now open with new features for guests

Post Date:05/24/2018 5:02 PM

Garden City – The Big Pool is now open for the season. The pool is open daily from 1 p.m. - 7 p.m. May 26 through August 12, and weekends only August 18 through September 3. The admission fee is $2 per person.

One of the biggest changes to the pool this year is the installation of a floating challenge course installed in the deep end of the pool. Garden City Mayor Roy Cessna tested out the new course shortly after it was installed.

“The course is a great new addition to The Big Pool,” Cessna said. “I tried it out, and it was a lot of fun. I recommend that everyone should come to The Big Pool to see it and try it out.”

Assistant City Manager Jennifer Cunningham, who oversees operations of the pool, said she hopes the challenge course will provide an entertainment option for pre-teens and kids who don’t want to hang out in the shallow end with their parents or siblings.

“I think this is going to be fun, and there are some kids who will come to the pool just for this,” she said.

The Big Pool will also stock new rental items to provide further entertainment options for visitors. Rental items include large layout floats, two-person tubes, single person tubes, dive rings, pool noodles, frisbees, and goggles.

Also new this year, visitors will no longer be required to pass a swim test before they can use the large slides. However, kids must still be 48 inches tall to use the slides. A swim test will be required for the use of the deep end and the challenge course by anyone 16 or younger. The swim test must be passed once each season. Visitors can take the test during normal pool hours or during a special event Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon, before the opening day event. Like the rest of the opening day activities, this is free.

Season passes for The Big Pool, water aerobics, and lap swims are also available. Individual pool passes are $55 for those 48 inches or taller and $45 for those under 48 inches tall. Family passes are available at $120 for a family of four. Each additional family member costs $15. Visitors can also purchase a booklet of 30 single-use passes for $50. Water aerobics will cost $5 per class or $20 for a season pass to all classes. Lap swim costs $2 per swim or $10 per season.

Other changes at The Big Pool include extended hours for the spray park. The spray park is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and is free to use when the pool is not open. When the pool is open, access to the park will be from the pool, and the fee is $2.

The Big Pool will also offer more specialized events throughout the summer including:

  • Monday Madness—on last Monday of each month when admission is just $1
  • Frozen Fridays—on the first Friday of each month when the first 100 guests through the gates will receive a free popsicle,
  • Unlimited Access Days—when children 12 and under in life vests can use the challenge course,
  • Saturday night swims
  • Concerts at the pool – July 6 and August 3
  • Movies at the pool – June 30 and July 21
  • Glow stick night – July 28
  • Deck art sidewalk chalk contest – July 28
  • Community picnic – August 11
