The Lee Richardson Zoo is delighted to announce another new addition to its family with the birth of a Bactrian, or “two-humped,” variety of camel. Born Tuesday morning, the silvery-grey male calf stands 4 ½ to 5 feet tall, and weighed in at 133 pounds. This is the seventh calf for the fourteen-year old mother and fifteen-year old father. African Lion Cubs Debut, Need Names - Posted 05/05/2009:
A trio of eight-week old lion cubs (a female and two males) made their public debut to an appreciative audience on Wednesday at the Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City. Under the watchful eye of their mother, the cubs explored their new world, becoming increasingly adventurous, attacking plants, climbing on logs, and entertaining onlookers with their antics. Community Grant Program - Posted 11/21/2008:
The City of Garden City is now accepting applications for its Community Grant Program. The Community Grant program is designed to systematically award funds to persons or organizations that undertake projects or begin programs that benefit the entire community or significantly benefit a targeted segment of the population. The Community Grant is intended to award money for projects or programs that would not customarily be funded through the annual City Budget, but serve to meet the identified goals and objectives of the City. The Western Kansas Broadcasting Center and the Garden City Telegram will be hosting their annual Candidate Forum on Wednesday, October 29, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Members of the public are encouraged to attend as candidates for the Finney County Commission will hold a debate which will be followed by a question and answer session with representatives from USD 457 to discuss the proposed school bond issue that will appear on the November 5 ballot. The Candidate Forum will be held in the Garden City Commission Chambers on the second floor of the City Administrative Center, 301 N. 8th St. The Candidate Forum will also be televised on Channel 8. FEMA Appeals Process Extension - Posted 10/16/2008:
The City of Garden City has notified the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) of its request to extend the deadline for appealing the proposed expansion of the existing Arkansas River Flood Plain to include Drainage District 1 and Drainage District 2 of the City’s storm water collection system an additional six months. New Changes to City Link Bus Service - Posted 7/16/2008:
City Link busses began running extended route schedules on Monday, July 14. Busses now depart from the Finney County Senior Center (907 N. 10th ST) beginning at 6:00 a.m. and will continue to run their regularly scheduled routes through 6:00 p.m., with the last bus arriving at the Senior Center at 7:00 p.m. Updated brochures outlining the extended schedule as well as fare information are now available at the City Administration Center (301 N. 8th ST) and at the Senior Center. 13th Annual Cop Shop Classic - Posted 2/27/2008:
The Garden City Police Department will be hosting the 13th annual Cop Shop Classic 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament. The event will be held at the basketball courts on the south side of the Garden City Community College dorms. It will take place on April 19, 2008 beginning at 10:00 a.m. Each team is allowed a team captain and 3 additional players. There are two age divisions: 13-16 year olds and 17 years old and up. First, second and third place teams will receive trophies. All players will receive a t-shirt for participating. Hot dogs, water and sports drinks will be provided. Power Supply Agreement - Posted 2/6/2008:
The City recently completed negotiations on a new power supply agreement with Wheatland Electric. The new agreement should provide the goal of continued stable rates for City customers by negotiating new parameters for energy (KWH), power (KW), energy cost adjustment (ECA), which is the monthly calculation of the total cost of fuel and/or purchased power necessary to provide the electricity needed to serve the customer base and facility costs.
