Household Hazardous Waste
The Household Hazardous Waste Facility is located at 206 Isabel Avenue. April 1st - October 31st, the facility is open on Thursdays from 12:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. and the first Saturday of every month from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. November 1st - March 31st, the facility will be open by appointment. You can reach HHW staff by calling 620-271-1427. Or calling the Solid Waste and Recycle Facility at 620-276-1278 Monday - Friday from 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

What is Household Hazardous Waste?

Hazardous products generally fall into one of four categories:   
  • Flammable or ignitable 
  • Corrosive 
  • Poisonous 
  • Reactive 

These products will usually have a warning label on the packaging reading “DANGER,” “WARNING,” or “CAUTION.”  

Common household products considered hazardous are:  
  • Oil-based paint, gasoline, fuels, and other flammable materials. 
  • Cleaning solutions, acids, and other corrosive substances. 
  • Pesticides, lead-based paint, and other poisons.  

The facility will NOT accept any radioactive or biomedical waste.

Are there disposal fees?
The facility accpets waste from Finney County residential customers at no charge. Businesses and non-residents are charged nominal fees to dispose of waste at the facility to help cover the City's operational costs:

• Paint—$3.00 per gallon
    • Flammables—$7.00 per gallon
    • Fluorescent Bulbs—$1.00 to $2.00 each
    • Corrosives—$1.00 per pound 
    • Aerosols—$5.00 per gallon
    • Oxidizers—$7.00 per gallon
    • Bulk Fuels—$7.00 per gallon
    • Antifreeze—$7.00 per gallon
    • Pesticides—$7.00 per gallon
    • Herbicides—$7.00 per gallon
    • Bases—$1.00 per pound 
    • Car Batteries—$2.00 each
    • Liquid Oxidizers—$7.00 per gallon
    • Dry Oxidizers—$7.00 per pound

What happens to the waste after I drop it off?
The City contracts with a licensed hazardous waste handler to pick up and properly dispose of the wast per state and federal regulations. 

However, the City is continually looking for ways to reuse these products. Certain products that the facility receives are made available for public use free of charge. These products, including paints, herbicides and pesticides, automotive care products, and household cleaning supplies, are located in the facility's lobby and can be browsed during operating hours. City departments also utilize certain products the facility receives including oils and fuels, herbicides, pesticides, fertilizer, and paints.
