Diversity Breakfast and Multicultural Summit to be October 11

Registration is now open for the 2018 Diversity Breakfast and Multicultural Summit to be held October 11 at the Clarion Inn in Garden City.

The breakfast, organized by the City of Garden City’s Cultural Relations Board and Multicultural Planning Committee, will celebrate the diverse culture of Somalia. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. with the breakfast presentation beginning at 8:00 a.m.

The breakfast will be followed by the annual Multicultural Summit. The event will include a cultural comparisons panel which will have representatives from various cultures. The panel will discuss the similarities and differences in major areas such as government, healthcare, law enforcement, and education. The event’s keynote speaker will be Elene Cloete, Ph.D., Socio-Cultural Anthropology. Her presentation will be “Culture, Deconstructed: Reconsidering how we think, talk, and act culturally.” During lunch, there will be a showcase of various cultural dress. 

The Multicultural Summit will also feature the film Strangers in Town. The film tells the story of how global migration unexpectedly transformed and enriched Garden City. It features interviews and footage of events and activities from the past year. Strangers in Town was filmed by Steve Lerner, Reuben Aaronson, and Jim Jewell.
