All non-certified officers will attend the basic academy at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center near Hutchinson, Kansas for 14 weeks (560 hours). There, the cadets learn countless lessons and certifications that they are able to apply to the streets of Kansas when they graduate.
Officers then undergo an extensive training program of approximately 12 additional weeks with the Garden City Police Department prior to being released as a solo officer.
Kansas law enforcement officers are required to obtain 40 hours annually of additional training. This is accomplished through in-service training coordinated by our Training Coordinator and is provided by department personnel, as well as by attending specialized training throughout the United States.
